“In Love With Crazy” (Excerpt)
Midnight falls, and Sadie awakens from her sleep. She had taken a late evening nap after a long day. Sadie turned over, grabbed her cell phone from her bedside, and took a look at her horoscope. Sadie Goodman was a Cancer, born July 11, 1987. Her horoscope for November 30, 2011 read: Are you having troubles in your love life, Moonchild? Is there a feeling inside of you that longs for more romantic fulfillment? You may feel that there is something missing right now, whether you are single or attached. But don’t worry; the stars are at work in your favor. If you are attached, there will be dramatically fulfilling developments to come. If you are single, don’t worry; love and happiness are on the way.
Although Sadie would have loved to be excited by these words, she was actually very discouraged. Her dating life was pretty much non-existent, as she had simply stopped dating because of the negativity and degradation that had come to run the dating scene. Sadie was looking for a positive experience, and she needed peace in her life; therefore, she avoided dating altogether. Thus, this horoscope reading saddened her, as she felt there was no hope for her love life. She became distraught. She placed her phone back on her nightstand and turned to lie on her back and stare at the ceiling for a moment while she thought to herself, “Why this message? It’s clear that no love is meant for me”. Sadie then turned her head toward her television that was in front of her bed. There was a movie on that she had not seen before. The scene showed a man in a 1930’s setting, yelling about random nonsense whilst hanging from a fire escape. Then, the young actor, Saide LaFont, appeared sticking his head out of a car window, wearing a sweater vest, button down shirt and a plaid Kangol. “What is he doing in this move? What is this”? Sadie thought aloud as she grabbed the remote to get more information on the film. The movie was What Goes Around, Come Around, and her eyes had not deceived her, Saide Lafont had starred in the film.
Although his starring in the film shouldn’t have really mattered, as she wasn’t a fan, Sadie was still taken aback by his face being shown to her in a moment of divine doubt. She wondered if this seemingly random scene was being shown to her as a form of divine intervention. Sadie thought to herself, “Why was he shown to me? Of all actors that could have come on screen, I’m shown someone who is not only handsome, but also my age.”
Sadie strongly believed that everything happened for a reason. She then grabbed her smart phone and did some research on the actor, Saide LaFont. He was only one year and eighteen days older than Sadie. He was also attracted to women like Sadie as far as personality and personal interests, but she also found that Saide was in a relationship with a make-up artist, Jennifer Nguyen. Even though this was initially discouraging, Sadie got on her computer and looked up photos of Saide and his girlfriend. Sadie noticed the body language of certain photos and got a feeling that the relationship wouldn’t have serious longevity. For some reason she couldn’t explain, Sadie became hopeful. She felt silly about the whole feeling at first, but as a hopeless romantic, she chose to follow her heart and allowed her feelings to flow. At this point, Sadie figured that she only lived this particular life once, and a new path towards finding the love, that the universe communicated was out there for her, was worth a risk. What’s the worst that could happen, right?
One night, while Sadie was working on a book, thoughts of her and Saide began to flutter through her mind. She initially imagined a story of them being best friends, and from that friendship they would become lovers. As the thoughts played through her mind, the story further developed. Soon, a movie began to play in her mind, and she was moved to write it out. Since Sadie didn’t know much about screenwriting, and was in the middle of writing a book already, she decided to make the story a novel and come back to it later. But no! A voice from within her yelled to her “MOVIE!” And then it was so.
Sadie began to write and research. She used academia, video and other various forms of text to gain more information on some spiritual topics. Sadie then wrote out a script. It was a drama about apocalyptic love, a subliminal love story. She often meditated upon how things would play out, and she would write down what she saw in her mind.
In February 2012, when the script was completed, she took the chance, put together a proposal for the film, and sent it priority mail, to her favorite directors, actors and producers, including Saide. She was anxious for about a week or so, and then a response came. On a Saturday morning, Sadie found that one of her packets was automatically sent back with correspondence stating that it was unsolicited, unread and unreviewed. She was disappointed at first, but she then gained some hope for the other packets that she sent out and had not received a response for, yet. She was hopeful, but realistic.
Sadie continued to daydream about the possibilities of what would happen if she got a positive response to any of her proposals. She wondered who would take the bait, what would happen, how life would change for her and her family, and most importantly, whether she would get to Saide or not. The days seemed to drag on and on for Sadie as she continued to work on other projects, trying avoiding the stress of her economic bind. She not only had her own bills, but also had to provide some financial assistance to her mother. Her anticipation and newly developed feelings of love and hope inspired her to write a new book while she awaited a response. Although her first book project was important to her, a newly inspired love story was at the forefront of her mind. She had to write it out. She had to create it. She had to bring her ultimate dream into existence, one way or another, for if her dream of being with Saide could not manifest from her film idea, then maybe it could manifest in another way. Her passion and willingness to allow unconditional love and positive feelings to radiate from her brought about some positive results.
About a month or so later, a response came from her favorite director, Shawn Smithson. The letter enclosed read:
Dear Ms. Goodman,
I have reviewed the materials you have sent to me, and I would like to speak with you further on the subject. If possible, I would like to read your full script, meet with you in person and go over what you have written.
In your proposal, you stated that home life and other family related expenses financially tie you, and I empathize with you and your situation. Thus, I am willing to provide travel, lodging and miscellaneous expenses to accommodate a 2-4 day stay here in Los Angeles. If you are willing to accept, or want to decline, please contact my secretary, Nola Simpson, at (323) 556 – 3320 Mon. –Fri. from 8:30a – 6p PST.
She will get all of your personal information needed for your reservations. I look forward to meeting you!

Sadie was ecstatic and elated. She jumped up and down screaming out in joy and crying with overflowing emotion due to the positive outcome of what following her heart yielded to her. She called her mother and shared the news. Her mother was overjoyed. Sadie then called her closest friend, Carlena. Her friend offered to take her out for drinks to celebrate. They all celebrated the news over the weekend. They cooked out on Sunday, as the weather was unusually warm. They had the works: ribs, steak, chicken, hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad, collard greens, macaroni and cheese, fresh tossed salad, black eyed peas, dressing, cornbread and home made gravy. Everyone was at Sadie’s mother’s house, including Sadie’s close-knit friends and loving family members. A grand total of nine people, but the love in the air was what mattered most. There were card games going, plenty of drinks and music. The atmosphere was positive and ready for a big change.
